Local 1 President, Tom Balanoff, receives his COVID-19 Vaccine!

A message from Tom Balanoff:

“As the president of this great Local, I assure you that Local 1 is fully invested in doing all we can to ensure you can make an informed decision around vaccination, providing you with the tools, knowledge and access you need to make a decision to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. What we know from the facts is that getting vaccinated is both safe and effective in fighting this virus. That's why I myself went and got vaccinated. I wanted to do my part to protect myself and those I love.

I encourage you to do the same because as essential workers, if you’re not safe on the job, neither are your residents, clients, communities or families.”

*Updated as of 05/20/20. Keep checking back here as we will add more information as it becomes available.

Local 1 has developed a 5-point plan to keep our union strong through these difficult and rapidly changing times:

1. Protecting our members and families is the top priority

2. If you choose to work your employer MUST provide the proper cleaning and safety equipment.

3. Local 1 is fighting for employers to continue to pay healthcare premiums for all sick, quarantined and laid-off workers and that workers are given an additional 2 weeks paid sick leave.

4. Local 1 is also allocating significant resources to assist members in navigating the process to apply for unemployment insurance. If you have been laid off or had hours reduced please call the MRC at 877-233-8880 to connect with our new Unemployment Resource Center.

5. Local 1 is on the front lines of making sure any federal assistance plan includes all working families, no matter our background, where we work or the color of our skin.

About COVID-19:

Most of you have been following the rapidly evolving situation regarding the coronavirus, or COVID-19.

COVID-19 is preventable and treatable, but only if we ensure working people are informed and protected. Basic wellness practices like frequent handwashing and staying home if we’re sick can help reduce the spread of COVID-19.

As local governments, employers, and contractors respond to the growing spread of COVID-19, many have offered a variety of services for working families to better prepare and keep their families safe and secure. Below is a list that Local 1 members from across all our cities and states can use to connect with resources in your community.

Together, across racial lines and different backgrounds, we will rise to meet this moment.
