CPS Janitors Win Sick Days

Chicago teachers, parents, and workers united and won sick days for janitors in the Chicago Public School system. Ron Huberman, CEO of Chicago Public Schools, promised that the upcoming school year’s contract would include two sick days for all janitors to guarantee the health of students and workers.

Results of SEIU Local 1 Constitution and By-Laws Vote

The votes are in! Local 1 members in 11 cities voted on Saturday, June 5th to amend the union’s constitution and by-laws.

By a margin of 97%, Local 1 members in Chicago, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Kansas City, St. Louis, and Houston voted “yes” on the proposed measure.

19 Arrested in Act of Peaceful Civil Disobedience Protesting Mistreatment of Sodexo Workers on Campus

COLUMBUS, OHIO—In response to rampant mistreatment reported by campus service workers of food service contractor Sodexo, more than 200 Ohio State University students, community members, and service workers marched and rallied on OSU’s campus Thursday. The march ended in an act of civil disobedience when workers and students sat down and blocked traffic on N High Street. 19 students and workers were arrested by Columbus Police. Sodexo employees at OSU’s facilities are paid poverty wages and most have no access to affordable health care.

Janitors’ New Contract Improves Jobs, Strengthens Houston’s Economy

At a time when Houston’s wealthy corporations are making record profits yet working people are struggling to make ends meet, janitors won a new contract that improves jobs for working families and strengthens our economy.  With wage increases and improved benefits, the agreement will pump an additional $3.6 million into the local economy over the next two years.

“We stood together and won fair raises and protected our health care,” says Austroberta Rodriguez, who has been a janitor in Houston for nearly 32 years.  “With each contract, we’re winning what we need to provide for our families and we’re building a better future for Houston."
