After a tireless fight, Local 1 members reach an agreement with Manage Chicago and CHA ensuring good union jobs for Black and Brown frontline essential workers on the southside.

CHICAGO – SEIU Local 1 maintenance workers, responsible for providing essential services for CHA tenants at Altgeld Gardens, came to an agreement with incoming contractor Manage Chicago. The agreement guarantees good union jobs with high wages and strong benefits for Black and Brown frontline essential workers on the southside.

In August 2021, CHA awarded a lucrative contract at Altgeld Gardens that employed 23 Local 1 maintenance workers to Manage Chicago, a property management company. Maintenance workers at Altgeld Garden immediately came together to fight to keep their jobs at CHA. They signed petitions, collectively sent hundreds of emails to CHA, requested job interviews, and held a press conference calling on CHA to do the right thing and save their jobs.

Their efforts were successful, and Manage Chicago came to the table and bargained in good faith with Local 1 maintenance workers to ensure job security with good wages and strong benefits. Local 1 members look forward to this new partnership with Manage Chicago so that maintenance workers can continue providing quality services to CHA tenants.

Local 1 essential workers will now shift their focus to an upcoming security contract that’s up for bid at CHA and to hire responsible contractors like Manage Chicago. All security officers at CHA must have the same voice on the job as maintenance and janitorial workers.
