Why join a Union? So you can invoke your Weingarten Rights
Weingarten Rights are based on a 1975 U.S. Supreme Court decision (NLRB v J. Weingarten Inc) which held that Union employees have a right to representation during investigatory interviews. By joining a Union, you have a legal right to inform your supervisor that you want a Union representative present when being asked questions by a LAZ manager that could lead to discipline, . If you are denied Union representation by a LAZ manager, you can politely state that you choose not to engage in further conversation without a Union representative present. If your request continues to be ignored, you can begin taking notes to document the exact nature of the conversation, including relevant names, dates and times. By joining a Union, you can stand firm and if necessary, reiterate to the LAZ manager that you have a legal right to Union representation during any conversations which may lead to discipline. Being in a Union gives you worker protections!
