Hundreds of Chicago Transit Authority Officers Join SEIU Local 1

Service Employees International Union Local 1 welcomes hundreds of essential Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) workers to the union. After years of organizing, the two newest CTA contractors, Monterrey Security and Inter-Con Security, have signed a CBA with Local 1.

Back in 2017, SEIU Local 1 Security Director Lonnell Saffold began engaging CTA about their use of an irresponsible contractor that lowered the labor standard that Chicagoans have fought long and hard for. Five years later, CTA released its latest RFP for unarmed security on all Chicago Transit Authority rail stations and facilities which included labor standards that support Chicago's working families and help keep transit users safe.

“CTA officers work tirelessly to keep our public transportation up and running, and keep passengers safe,” said SEIU Local 1 President Genie Kastrup. “Like most communities across the country, the COVID-19 pandemic has drastically impacted Chicago. We are seeing exacerbated economic disparity, increased mental health crises and a sharp rise in crime. These officers are doing everything they can to protect us and our families - it is long overdue for them to have the respect, protection and pay they deserve. I am excited for these hardworking officers to join the Local 1 family!”
