SEIU Local 1 Vice President Yanela Sims Responds to Killing of Ma’Khia Bryant by Police

COLUMBUS  - The following is a statement from SEIU Local 1 Vice President Yanela Sims regarding the killing of Ma’Khia Bryant in Columbus, Ohio by a police officer:

“As we heard the verdict passed down on Derek Chauvin for his murder of George Floyd, Ma’Khia Bryant, a 16-year-old Black child was unjustifiably killed at the hands of the police.

“Far too often, we see a new hashtag with a different name. We are tired of being compliant and fighting against a system that was not meant to protect Black and Brown lives. We must create a system that works for all.

“As we mourn yet another loss, SEIU Local 1 leaders and members will continue to stand together to reimagine public safety and the role police play in keeping our communities safe. We know these events are not a coincidence, but a pattern of structural racism that we are fighting to eradicate.”
