Why This CHA Janitor Loves Her Job and Needs It

My name is Shaquita Moore and I’ve been a janitor employed by Habitat for the past year and a half where I work at William Castleman Apartments at CHA.

Me and my co-workers have been working and taking care of CHA residents since the very beginning of the pandemic, often putting our own health at risk. I’m writing today because my colleagues and I are worried about losing our jobs during a pandemic as a result of the private property services contract being re-bid.

I love this job. I love the energy the senior citizens have and their motivation to get up in the morning to do what they need to do. It’s an honor to go to work every day and check up on them and make sure they’re staying safe.

During this pandemic I make sure to wipe and sanitize each and every surface. I take out the garbage and mop all the floors and complete any work orders that come in.

With a good union contract I’ve done well for myself and would like for that to continue. I’m able to take care of six children, one of whom is a special needs child.

I need this job to take care of my family and to continue providing good services for the seniors. Me and my co-workers urge the CHA to continue utilizing a responsible contractor who will provide CHA tenants with high quality services and treat its workers with dignity and respect.
