Maintenance Contract FAQ’s

Vacation - After six months you get one week and then one additional week at your one-year mark. You build up your vacation time through the year and then earn it all at once either on your anniversary date or whatever date your employer has chosen (varies by building).

Floating Holidays - Three total per year. Management can require they be used once every four months.

Sick Days - After six months you receive five days, and an additional five paid days every year. You can carry over up to 30 days.

Sick Leave Disability - You are entitled to up to 23 days of additional sick leave for a bona fide disability - hospitalization or outpatient procedure. You’re also entitled to up to six months of unpaid leave under the contract for illness or disability.

Grievance Procedure - If you have any dispute with management regarding a conflict with the contract, the union must meet with your manager within 15 business days (excluding holidays and weekends) or the dispute is dead. Call the Member Resource Center within a week of the discipline or contractual dispute occurring (or you becoming aware of it).

Seniority - Based on time in the building, not with the company. Some buildings will honor seniority for vacation purposes from other buildings, but this does not apply to other seniority issues including order of layoff or shift assignment.

Probation - During this time you can be fired without just cause. After probation is up, management must follow progressive discipline and have good reason (with evidence) for any disciplinary action.

Pension - You are eligible for your pension after five years of continuous contributions. If you switch jobs before five years, make sure neither of your employers misses a payment! After five years, each additional year will count.

Training Fund - Take advantage of it! The maintenance classes are minimum cost to you as a member and once you complete the full Maintenance A coursework your class fees are fully refunded to you. Training Fund location is 120 S. Sangamon St., Chicago.
