Houston Community Calls on PJS to Support Good Jobs

Hundreds of Houston janitors, faith leaders and community supporters have been calling on Professional Janitorial Services (PJS) to support the good jobs that our economy needs.

When janitors return to contract negotiations to reach a new agreement that will provide better jobs for Houston, the majority of cleaning contractors will be joining with janitors to play a positive role in Houston’s economic recovery.

Unfortunately, PJS refuses to join these responsible businesses to create a better future for working families and our city. While most janitors in Houston are beginning to lift themselves out of poverty, PJS janitors are still paid poverty-level wages, are not offered health care and do not have the right to paid vacations or many of the other benefits that responsible contractors provide.

PJS also has a track record of violating federal law.  In December 2008, the National Labor Relations Board ruled that PJS violated federal law by refusing to bargain with janitors at a number of different buildings.  Additionally, the local office of the federal labor board found evidence that PJS violated federal law by threatening and interrogating janitors who spoke up for higher standards.

It's time for PJS to stop standing in the way of a strong economic recovery for Houston and instead start contributing to our city’s prosperity and growth by helping transform janitorial jobs into the middle-class jobs that Houston’s economy needs.
