SEIU Local 1 Members Push for Public Transportation Funding and Freedom for Workers to Form Unions
SEIU Local 1 Members from across the state visited the Missouri State Capitol to make sure legislators heard from working people on issues important to us.
Employee Free Choice
The group of janitors and other union members urged state legislators to oppose a bill—the so-called "Save Our Secret Ballot" bill—that could deny Missouri workers a free choice of whether to form a union without harassment or fear of punishment.
When workers have the freedom to form unions, they can have a voice to share in the economic progress they create and can join the middle class. To get our economy back on track, we need to rebuild a strong middle class in Missouri because that’s the engine of real economic strength that will last.
Access to Public Transportation
The janitors and other union members succeeded in helping to push legislators to pass emergency public transportation funding for the St. Louis Metro. After severe cuts to the city's public transportation system, many janitors and other night workers had no transportation to and from their jobs. The $12 million funding restores the night transportation routes temporarily, but workers will continue to fight for permanent funding for the public transportation working families depend on.
