Welcome to the SEIU Local 1 Retiree Chapter. The Retiree Chapter was founded over 30 years to keep retirees in touch with Local 1. Our goal is to keep retirees involved in the labor movement by utilizing their life experiences and career union activism. Your retirement does not end your association with Local 1 and SEIU. “Retired and Active” is our slogan!
The Chapter organizes and participates in many activities and involves itself with many issues and causes affecting retirees and seniors. We have affiliations with many retiree groups, including the Illinois Alliance of Retired Americans and the SEIU Retiree Advisory Council.
As a member of the retiree chapter you receive the chapter newsletter and a membership card that enables you to take advantage of Local 1’s Member Rewards Program. Annual dues are $36.00. Your spouse is welcomed to join as well.
For more information or to join the retiree chapter please call 773-728-6065. You can also call the union office at 312-240-1600.

Illinois Cares Rx Still Stands

Despite Governor Quinn’s proposal to eliminate Illinois Cares Rx, the Illinois General Assembly passed a budget that includes funding for the program. Although the funding was cut approximately in half, Illinois Cares Rx is still standing. Because of the reduced funding the following changes will be made to the program:

  1. Beginning September 1, 2011 enrollees must have an income equal to or less than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level.  This will result in approximately 30,000 people being removed from the program.
  2. The co-payments will be changed.  These co-payments were not set in the budget and a rule making process may change these amounts.
    • $5.00 for all generics
    • $15 for preferred brand named drugs
    • $20 for non-preferred brand named drugs
    • $15 fro specialty drugs
    • 25% cost share after $2850 in drug costs(doughnut hole coverage)
  3. The $25 rebate option is eliminated.

The rest of the Illinois Cares Rx remains in place and is expected to continue to pay premiums, deductibles and prescription drugs not covered by Medicare Part D. The Circuit Breaker program, which includes a property tax grant and license plate discount, has not been changed. Members of the Illinois Alliance worked to protect this crucial program by calling State Legislators. Thanks to all of you that took action to prevent this program from being eliminated.

Local 1 Retirees Fight Attacks on the Elderly

Join Local 1 retiree in taking action by contacting your congressional representatives to speak out against the effort to eradicate Medicare and erode away the Social Security Fund we’ve all contributed to.

On May 18 the Local 1 Retiree Chapter participated in a forum discussing attacks on Social Security and Medicare that was sponsored by the Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans.

The forum educated people about proposed legislation that would undermine access to affordable care f or the elderly by eliminating Medicare. Proposals would also further cripple the Social Security fund. Congressman Schakowsky (pictured with the Local 1 retirees) stressed the need to reform our backwards tax structure—which takes money from working people to fund corporate giveaways while cutting critical services to our communities.

The Local 1 Retiree Chapter meets on the second Tuesday of every month. For more information or to join the chapter please contact Joan Baumeister, President at 773-728-6065.
