We know this is a difficult and uncertain time for many working families across the country. Your Union, SEIU Local 1, is committed to ensuring the health and safety of all members. We have several important updates in this regard.
Through negotiations, your Union, SEIU Local 1, and the Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago (BOMA/Chicago) reached the below agreement that will help keep janitors and security officers healthy and safe while protecting their livelihoods during the COVID-19 crisis. Read more below (Applicable for those under BOMA/me-too agreements, information current as of April 9):
- Members who are sick with COVID-19 symptoms on the job and sent home by your employer, will be sent home with two weeks pay and asked to self-quarantine for that time
- If you are scared to come into work, you may take paid time off or unpaid leave (or a combination) with no repercussions to you on the job
- If layoffs occur, members will receive an additional 30 days of health insurance—the possibility to receive more will be revisited after the 30-day mark.
Your Union is in communication with BOMA and can extend the agreement if necessary. And check out the coverage in the Chicago Sun-Times. If you have any questions or are having any issues on the job, please contact the Member Resource Center at (312) 233-8880.
In addition, we have an important update regarding Union Health Service (UHS).
To better serve those with COVID-19 symptoms and to protect those who do not, UHS will be temporarily closing satellite facilities which do not meet the needed requirements to treat COVID-19 patients. Alternative procedures are being set-up to provide treatment and UHS has increased the availability of health professionals to respond to phone calls.
Urgent care and other services are still being provided. Before going to a UHS facility please call ahead at (312) 423-4200 to ensure the process can go as smoothly as possible. For more details, click HERE.
Local 1’s top priority is protecting the health, wellbeing and livelihoods of members. The COVID-19 crisis is a rapidly changing and evolving one; stay tuned for more updates.
Please stay strong and stay safe.
