On Thursday, June 18, the Milwaukee County Finance Committee took a stand against awarding public funds to irresponsible janitorial contractor CleanPower. The news comes just weeks after the City Council unanimously adopted a Responsible Bidder’s Ordinance for the city of Milwaukee that was then signed into law by Mayor Tom Barrett.
After hearing testimony from SEIU Local 1 janitors and staff, County Supervisor Peggy Romo West quickly moved to reject CleanPower’s contract bid. “We’ve rejected this contractor before,” Supervisor West, expressing frustration after rejecting CleanPower’s bid in 2013. West went on to say that she refused to support a contractor with a history of problematic treatment towards women of color.
Though the Finance Committee is recommending that the County stop doing business with CleanPower, the irresponsible contractor’s bid will now be heard by the County Board of Supervisors.
